Chihuahua

Breed Type: Toy

Weight: 6 lbs

Height: 6 to 9 inches

Coat type: Have both short haired and long haired coat.

Color: Available in all colors.

The smallest breed of dog in the world, Chihuahua is named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. The canine loves company and is happy being the center of a discussion. The dog is intelligent and responsive and can be trained a number of tricks. Chihuahuas are long lived and often live for 16 years. The breed has also become a part of a popular crossbreed in the United States in the form of Chihuachshund i.e. pairing of a Chihuahua and a Dachshund. Another unusual crossbreed is called the Chihueagle, a pairing of the Chihuahua and the Beagle. In the following lines, we have provided the history, appearance and personality of Chihuahua.

History
According to folklore and archeological records, Chihuahua seems to have originated from Mexico. The breed descended from the Techichi, a companion dog favoured by the Toltecs. Named after the Mexican State that borders Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico, Chihuahua was found in 1850 in old ruins near Casas Grandes. These were thought to be the ruins of the palace built by Emperor Montezuma I.

The initial Chihuahua was longhaired and mute and was considered sacred by the wealthy and clergy class. The modern breed of Chihuahua was developed by breeding it with miniaturized Chinese dogs. The tiny modern day Chihuahua has gone through many changes and become very popular since their discovery. Though the smooth coated variety is most recognized, the long-coat variety is increasing both in terms of number and popularity.

Appearance
Chihuahua has distinctive features, which makes it stand out even in the crowd of canines. The trademark feature is its triangular shaped ear that stands out erect. Chihuahua has an apple-shaped head with round, large, very dark eyes and a short muzzle. A tiny dog, it usually has a cobby (stout) body that is more in terms of length than height. Its tail is sickle-shaped curled over the back or to the side. During the first few years, the puppies have a soft spot or 'molera' on the top of the skull. However, with time and age, the canine gets into a robust built with a level back and legs that fall straight and square. The coat has either short hairs or long ones and is available in variety of colors including fawn, sand, chestnut, silver and steel blue, black & tan and bi-color.

Personality
This tiny cute dog breed is just adorable. Most loved by the kids, Chihuahua makes a great companion dog. Intelligent and oblivious to their size and capability, they are sometimes too brave. They can live well with other dogs and cats and serve as toys for smaller children. Generally speaking, they form close bonds with one person only. Chihuahua becomes intensely loyal and extremely attached to its owners. The canines should be well trained right from a tender age else they might get to dominant later. These dogs are eager to learn but usually people don't train them, as they are very small in size. While some may prove to be slightly difficult to train, the others are intelligent, learn quickly and respond well to proper, positive reinforcement training.

Bulldog

Breed Type: Non-sporting

Weight: 50 lbs for Males, 40 lbs for Females

Height: 12 to 15 inches

Bulldog, also known as the British bulldog, or English bulldog, is one of the strong, reliable, loving, loyal and brave breeds of dog. Tracing its roots back to England, the breed is often confused with the American and French versions, as all of them have a similar appearance. One of the most favorable characteristics of Bulldog is its adaptable nature that makes it extremely friendly and affable. Though they might look dangerous, bulldogs make loving and caring companions. To know more about the history, appearance and personality of Bulldogs, read through the following lines.

History
There is no definite information about the origin of Bulldogs as a breed of dogs. According to a theory, Bulldogs were bred in England as a cross between the mastiff and the pug, around 1568. In 1600s, the canines were used by the wagers for bullbaiting as well as bearbaiting, a gambling sport wherein trained bulldogs leapt at a bull lashed to a post, latched onto its snout and attempted to suffocate it. Apart from being used in the field of sports, Bulldog was also used as part of a city-wide roundup effort led by governor Richard Nicolls. Since wild bulls proved to be risky and unsafe, bulldogs were trained to grab hold of a bull.

The English bulldog was bred with the pug, thereby giving birth to a shorter and wider version of dog that had a brachycephalic skull. This is the sole reason why even though the bulldog looks tough; it cannot perform the tasks for which it was created initially. The Bulldog Club was one of the oldest single breed specialty clubs that was formed in 1878. Thirteen years later, in 1891, a competition was held between the two top bulldogs, Orry and Dockleaf, in order to know which of them could walk the farthest. While the former was more like the initial bulldogs with a lighter boned and athletic build, the latter was smaller and heavier just like the ones found today. Dockleaf emerged triumphant in the competition, thereby proving to be as fit and athletic as Orry.

Appearance
Characterized by a stout and sturdy body, Bulldogs mostly have a small but wide and compact stature, with a thick, massive head. While the head should be extremely broad, the cheeks should be one that falls to the sides of the eyes. Bulldogs have a short muzzle, with a broad black nose that has large nostrils. Its ears are small and thin, folded back in the form of a rose. The skin of the canine is one that falls in dense folds with a short smooth and tight fitting coat that is varies in red, fawn, brindle, pale yellow, washed-out red or white or even a combination of any the above. It has stocky legs that are set squarely at each corner of its compact, muscular body. Bulldogs usually have a docked tail that is usually carried high.

Personality
People usually get baffled by the look of the dog. However, you might be surprised to know that Bulldogs are the gentlest amongst all dogs. Vivacious, energetic and spirited, their energies slow down as they get older. Extremely affectionate and dependable, the animal is gentle when it comes to being with children. Nonetheless, Bulldog is courageous, bullheaded, determined and has excellent guarding abilities. It is not one among those who give up easily. An attention seeker, the canine loves getting noticed and adores all the love and affection. There are some English Bulldogs, who are obstinate and stubborn and require a strong owner. They gel well with family members as well as other pets.

American Pit Bull is one of the famous dog breeds of America. It is best known for its herding, guarding, hunting, policing, cart pulling and ratting skills. History
American Pit Bulls are thought to be developed from the Bull and Terrier types of the past. The firmness and accompanying strength of these dogs are rarely found in other dog breeds. Old prints and woodcarvings of dogs reveal that their look is exactly similar to the present breed of American Pit Bulls. Earlier, the Pit Bull was considered a much-loved and trustworthy companion. A Pit Bull, named Band Dog Dread, has received the highest number of canine working titles than any other breed. Although these dogs are capable of many tasks, they are becoming unpopular due to some of their biting and aggressive stories. It has been argued by some that these stories are wrongly spread by media as they themselves are not sure that the dog, they mention in such stories, are the original breed of American Pit Bulls or some mixed breed.

History
The Malamute is a descendant of dogs of the Mahlemuts, the tribe which was found in upper western Alaska. These dogs helped their human companions in several ways and were mainly used for hunting. The recent DNA analysis shows that Malamutes are one of the oldest breeds of dog which are genetically distinct from other dog breeds. Few Malamutes are still used as sled dogs for personal travel, hauling freight, or are helped in moving heavy objects. Today, most Malamutes are used as family pets or show dogs.

Alaskan Malamute was earlier used for pulling heavy freighting, hundreds and maybe thousands of pounds of supplies to villages and camps in groups of around 4 dogs for heavy loads. Even then, it never got a status of racing sled dog. The Alaskan Malamute is said to be a member of the Spitz group of dogs, traced back to the Mahlemuits tribe of Alaska that were found 2,000 to 3,000 years ago. A bill to name the malamute, the official state dog of Alaska, is underway in the Alaska House.

Alaskan Malamutes loves to enjoy snow and therefore prefer to be outdoors in winter. This breed is found to be quite comfortable among other pets but some times can get irritated in their company.

The most commonly reported health problems of Alaskan Malamutes, according to the 2004 UK Kennel Club survey, were musculoskeletal that is a kind of hip dysplasia, and another is hereditary cataracts. Other health issues which are commonly seen in Malamutes are inherited polyneuropathy, chondrodysplasia, and eye problems, particularly cataract and progressive retinal atrophy.

Grooming
To keep Alaskan Malamutes in good shape is not a hard job. Only needed is, a little grooming from time to time. Make sure to brush the hair of the dog with a coarse comb as the shedding of this breed is good enough. One hour of hard exercise daily is a must for Alaskan Malamutes to keep them fit.

The Afghan Hound is a breed of very old sighthound dog. This breed is famous for its thick, fine, silky coat and its tail with a ring curl at the end. Other names by which this breed has been called are Balkh Hound, Baluchi Hound, Barutzy Hound, Shalgar Hound, Kabul Hound, and Galanday Hound. It is also sometimes incorrectly called African Hound.

History
The modern Afghan Hound breed comes out of the longhaired sighthound types known in Afghanistan. Sighthounds were divided into two main strains. The first were a group of hounds brought to Scotland from Baluchistan by Major and Mrs. G. Bell-Murray and Miss Jean C. Manson in 1920, and were known as the Bell-Murray strain. These dogs were of the lowland or steppe type, also called kalagh, and are not heavily coated. The second strain was a group of dogs from a kennel in Kabul owned by Mrs. Mary Amps, which she shipped to England in 1925. This breed was also known as the mountain breed. The first Afghans in Australia were imported from the United States in 1934.

The French breed club FALAPA was formed in 1939. The mountain and steppe strains became mixed into the modern Afghan Hound breed, and a new standard was written in 1948, which is still used today. The stunning beauty of Afghan Hound dogs made them highly desirable show dogs and pets, and they are recognized by all the major kennel clubs in the western countries. The Afghan Hound, named Ghazni Sirdar, won BIS (Best in Show) at Crufts in 1928 and 1930. This breed was the most popular in Australia in the 1970’s and won most of the major shows in the country. Grooming
Afghan Hounds needs careful grooming for at least one hour twice a weak and timely cleaning of ear passages is also a must. The long and fine-textured coat requires considerable care and grooming. Traveling With Pet

If your pet has a medical history, travel with a copy of your pet's medical records.
If your pet is on medication, be sure to take enough of them.
If your pet is on a special therapeutic diet, purchase an extra supply in case you can't find the food right away in your new area.
Carry a first aid kit for your pet. While first aid is no substitute for veterinary care, it could save your pet's life.
If your move involves driving, book ahead hotels that accept animals.
If traveling by plane, call the airline in advance to check out regulations and services and to make reservations. Some airlines allow pets in the cabin, but you will need to purchase a special airline crate that fits under the seat in front of you.
. For the pet's comfort, air travel on an almost empty stomach is advisable.
Some pets travel better while tranquilized.
While traveling to other countries, it is important to carry a rabies vaccine certificate.
If you are traveling in a car, first make your pet accustomed to the car. Take it for a few short rides before the trip. This may lessen the effects of motion sickness.
Keep your pet buckled up in a moving vehicle. This protects the pets in case of a collision, and prevents pets from running loose and distracting the driver.
Pets should not be allowed to ride with their heads outside the car windows. Dirt particles can enter the eyes, ears and nose, causing injury or infection.
Stick to your regular feeding routine while traveling, and give your pet its main meal at the end of the day or when you've reached your destination.
Feeding dry food is more convenient while traveling. Dispose of un-canned food unless it can be refrigerated.
While leaving the pet in a parked car, be sure to - lock all doors, park in a shady area, and open windows wide enough to provide ventilation without enabling your pet to jump out or get its head caught. Be aware of weather conditions. Do not leave your pet in a parked car when the temperature and/or humidity are high or when temperatures are near or below freezing point.
To avoid losing your pet during a trip, put an ID tag around your pet.

Training your Pet

Pets are unique in their own sense. They have their own natural behavior. You have to mould their behavior as per your requirement. All this calls for training of pets.

Two cardinal rules that are to be followed while training your pet towards desirable behavior are:
Never reprimand or punish your cat for an unwanted behavior. This may make your pet fearful of you or else the pet will continue with the unwanted behavior in your absence.
Reward your pet for the desired behavior. It will act as a positive reinforcement.
While training a puppy regarding food habits, put your puppy on a consistent feeding schedule. Feed a puppy below six months three times per day and at the same time each day. Feed an adult dog twice a day and at the same time each day. Feed the same food consistently. Changing foods can cause finickiness and intestinal upset.

Regarding bowel habits, puppies typically need to go out within 30 minutes after a meal, and almost immediately after awakening, shortly after a play session, and just before going to bed at night. Puppies have limited bladder and bowel control and need to go out rather frequently during the day, and sometimes during the night.

Cats have an excessive habit of meowing. They do so when they want to attract attention, when they are hungry or when they are bored. Do break this habit exercise and play regularly with your cat. Don't pay attention to her and give her anything when she is meowing. In fact ignore her completely whenever she does so. Fulfill her needs when she is quiet. This will instill in her mind the desired behavior that is expected of her.
